Family Law Links
The family law links provided here are intended to provide information on self help and other related resources for eastern Kern County. Many people have handled their own divorce case without a lawyer. This is especially true for situations where the marriage is short term, modest income from employment only, and no children. In addition, the County provides child support services. Some links may require a PDF file reader. If you do not already have a reader, it is available for free from Adobe.
There are many self help resources available for family law. One resource and a good place to start is the California Courts Self Help Center at http://www.courtinfo.ca.gov/selfhelp/family/. For child and spousal support cases the local Family Law Facilitator can provide direction to the unrepresented party. For the Mojave and Ridgecrest Family Law Facilitator contact information see http://www.kern.courts.ca.gov/pdf/flf_travel_moj_ridge.pdf. For child support services in Kern County http://www.co.kern.ca.us/childsupport/. Child support services include helping in establishing and enforcing Child Support Orders, establishing paternity, and locating parents. California family law code is available at http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/calawquery?codesection=fam&codebody=&hits=20. There are also paralegal resources available that can help fill in forms for a reasonable fee. However, they can not provide legal advice. Legal self help books such as those from Nolo Press and the like are available. A new twist on do-it-yourself divorce help, are online sites such as https://www.divorcewriter.com/Home.asp.
